Powering to the top: Powerhouse Self-Defense

A class full of women, ages 12 to 45, listened intently as Jennifer Riis-Poulsen explained the importance of awareness. She asked for two volunteers. Two young girls stood up, and were told to close their eyes and walk forward. She grabbed one of the girls quickly, surprising and startling the girl and everyone in the class.

“Ladies, if you aren’t aware and not paying attention to your surroundings, you might as well be walking with your eyes closed,” Riis-Poulsen explained.

This statement resonated, and each person in the class seemed to realize the importance and value of what they were about to learn. After a quick lecture on awareness, the women were excited and ready to start learning techniques for self-defense. Riis-Poulsen, along with her instructors began teaching over the next two hours, giving each woman a sense of incredible empowerment. This is Riis-Poulsen’s mission. This is Powerhouse Self-Defense.

Powerhouse History

In November 2011, Jennifer Riis-Poulsen, founder, CEO and a 2nd degree black belt, formed Powerhouse Self-Defense as a response to the ever-increasing statistics on the number of women attacked and sexually assaulted each year. She made reducing these statistics a personal goal and set out to develop a comprehensive self-defense program focused on awareness and powerful techniques used for defense. Riis-Poulsen formed Roswell Self-Defense for Ladies, which eventually came to be the Powerhouse Self-Defense  Program  as communities voiced their needs for more than just self-defense workshops for women. Riis-Poulsen’s company has since branched out from teaching self-defense to only adult women and has partnered with the Girl Scouts of America teaching young women the importance of awareness and the importance of knowing how to defend themselves. College campuses have also partnered with Powerhouse in an attempt to empower and bring awareness to women in college. As the company has grown locally, the Powerhouse Self-Defense Program has also gained a national presence and has been asked to offer workshops across the country, including locations such as Las Vegas, Nev. and Clearwater, Fla.

Powerhouse Classes

The Powerhouse Self-DefenseSM  workshops are offered in two-hour increments, and completion of the program requires 10 hours of instruction in total, which can be completed at the participants’ convenience. Powerhouse Self-Defense makes completion feasible by coming to any location requested with the expectation of having at least 10 participants per class. Although completing the full 10 hours is not required, Jennifer greatly stresses the importance of continuing training and not walking away with just two hours of instruction.

“While one class can be empowering, the full experience is life-changing,” said Riis-Poulsen.

The Power Behind Powerhouse

Not many people can take a small, local business and transform it into a national business in less than a year. The heart and driving force behind the success of the company is Jennifer Riis-Poulsen, whose passion, sincerity, and commitment to reducing the startling statistics on attacks and sexual assault against women have made the company a success. Jennifer’s extensive knowledge and expertise in martial arts along with her charm and unadulterated passion for the cause have made her company a success. With Jennifer, there is no doubt Powerhouse Self-Defense will continue to grow and empower women all around the nation.
